  1. We had similar ideas about how most girls love to talk about fashion, but not boys. So when we introduce a new topic about fashion, we focus also on technology and this way everyone has a positive participation because they all have their own ideas and collaborate in a natural way through conversation. When fashion is chosen we understand that it means everything that is updated.

  5. I decided to teach adjective vocabulary to 3rd grade by comparing opposites and asking questions about animals. After doing a small speaking activity I asked for a volunteer to match adjectives on the board (ie. good-bad, happy-sad, etc). I was shocked when the whole class practically jumped out of their seats and wanted to volunteer. Everybody had learned all the adjectives (about 10 in total) and perfectly understood the activity. This experience helped me understand what a great tool comparing opposites and using pictures to describe can be. In the future I hope to use this strategy as a base in teaching beginner's level English because it can build on itself quite easily.

A los estudiantes de basica elemental les encanta cantar canciones y tambien colorear temas en el área de la lengua extranjera, también vamos cambiando con cuentos donde dramatizamos y forma parte del personaje.
En básica superior utilizamos la tecnología observando vídeo musicales y que mejor en inglés lo traducimos y entendemos de que trata y sacamos un mensaje

    1. My colleague and I had the same opinion about teaching baccalaureate students in our public high school. They came to baccalaureate from "básica superior" with English emptiness. So:
what: We expected to see them working with short dialogues or working in pairs, but they do not have strong development of oral speaking, neither an average level.
so what: maybe students need to be motivated. Maybe, they received only repetitive activities, being passive learners with teacher-centered approach.
now what: motivate students to participate with short words, little by litter, not focusing on quick progress but accurate and strong. Provide them with short readings, fairy tales or popular artists, real contexts to students

  12. Hi,
We discussed about group work inside English class. In our institute there are different majors and students don't have contact between them during the regular classes, but they are mixed in English. As a result, they always sit by groups (same majors), so as teachers we recommend them to make new friends from different majors. At the beggining that's almost impossible because they don't have enough social skills. Regularly, they are so shy or introvert. By using gamification and motivation they change their minds and share. At the end of the academic cycle they made new friends. That's why learning by playing is so important, because it challenges themselves.

  13. My coworker Olga and I, again agree when saying journaling is a great technique to develop a better and better teaching role everyday. For instance we were talking about one of our last classes and we remember that it was about food and we wanted students to learn vocabulary and prepare a recipe but we couldn't accomplish the lesson plan because the time was not enough so with this reflection we could select an easier recipe or devide the class into groups to develop the instructions of the recipe, or even ask them to prepare the recipe at home and bring some picture for the next class as evideince and talk about it into groups.

What: Write a short essay using connectors.
So what: Students don't have the same level of English, so advanced Students were happy with the activity while beginners were stressful and disappointed.
Now what: Divide the class in Groups to strenght the level of English of those Students to encorauge them to do it with some extra help.

The activity consisted of raising flashcards with (/d/ /t/ /-ed/) to show how the regular verb needs to be pronounced depending on the rules that they known. For me, it was too simple that I thought my students will get bored, but their behavior surprises me a lot, they loved that kind of activity, all of them participated raising the flashcards and sharing the reason why the verb should be pronounced in that way. Their attitude made me forget the rest of the activities that I had planned for that class.

    So what?
It took me 3 lesson - hours to complete this assignment with them while with other groups it took me two lesson- hours.

  38. Maydi Hermosa here!

I chat with Fernanda again. She told me that once she invited to the students to play "la botella" ( you know, when people form a circle, a bottle is in the middle of it, a person spins the bottle and when the bottle's peak points a person this person has to answer a question or accomplish a challenge...) so, she wanted to do a funny and interesting activity for teeneagers but it went wrong...

    What?,
She expected students were engaged with an activity that usually is played by them but in English and using grammar learnt, but it did not happen.

    So what?,
She could realize that they were ashamed. Maybe they didn't want to talk about something personal with the entire class. Maybe it is not the same playing "la botella" with friends than with other classmates they did not trust. It is possible that they did not want to expose personal things in front to a teacher. Maybe they were unsecure of speaking English or they didn't know how to express something personal because their English level wasn't high.

    Now what?
It is important not to make teeneagers feel exposed, at their age they are still unsecure of themselves
Maybe this game would be funny but without including information that may result private.

  40. We were talking about short talks. Create a stack of topic cards for your students, so that each student will have their own card. Each student draws their card, and then you assign them a time limit—this limit may be one minute initially, or maybe three minutes when they have had practice. This is the amount of time that they’ll have to speak about their given topic.

Now give the students a good chunk of time to gather their thoughts. You may want to give them anywhere from 5 minutes to half an hour for this preparation stage. You can let them write down three to five sentences on a flashcard to remind them of the direction they’ll take in the course of their talk. It is an activity that she developed with her students and now I am going to develop in my classes.

I called to my friend Susy because she is an excellent teacher and sometimes both she and me share ideas about methodologies or strategies that can be applied in our classes. She had the next experience: For listening and speaking class, she decided what song the students had to prepare. Most of them, got bad grades because they did not like that song, therefore they did not practice it. She asked students what had happened, they told her they wanted to sing another song. She gave them another opportunity and they could do it better. She learned that sometimes we have to let students choose the way they want to work.

  81. I phoned to my friend Maria who is in Salinas. I told her about a class that i taught recently at my school what were my expectations, what happened during the class and what decision i took after that class. I remember in that class I taught regular and irregular verbs in the present perfect. The objective of the lesson was use Present perfect in affirmative and negative form. At the first time I introduced the verbs in the past perfect form. After that the structure of the sentences using present perfect tense. Next step was apply a game to my students used the regular and irregular verbs correct form in the present perfect tense. I was expecting they were successfull in that part but most of them failed using the correct structure and the correct form of the verbs. My colleague and I reflected on the performing and results that I got in that class. We both agreed that the next time I must make a deep reinforcement on the form of irregular verbs in the present perfect tense with ludic activities in that way they are going to remember them in a easiest form. And we also think THAT THE PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT; more time our pupils use the English language they will be successful on it.

  82. I remenber my last class. It was through a game I think games can be fun. Games are also a great way to keep lessons interesting. If your students need to remember their spelling words, conduct a spelling bee—a contest in which participants are eliminated when they misspell a word. Or if the students need to practice numbers, have a math bee, which is similar to a spelling bee, but with numbers problems or facts instead of spelling words. Games make learning fun, and games in class are good way to learn english.

I had the next experience: For listening I decided what song the students had to prepare. Most of them, got bad grades because they did not like that song, therefore they did not practice it. He asked students what had happened, they told me they wanted to sing another song. I gave them another opportunity and they could do it better. i learned that sometimes we have to let students choose the way they want to work.

  86. I could not talk to any colleague these days. That's why I am going to share some ideas about a reflexion I had with one of my colleagues some months ago. We have discussed about difficulties in grouping students in speaking activities. If we pair a slow and fast student, the fast one controls de conversation. If we pair two slow students and two fast students, the fast ones finish the activity first and start making noise. If we ask students to pair themselves, they do not do the activity responsibly. We agreed that we still need to learn about it.

    What?
    The use of present perfect.
    So what?
Not all students remember or learn the past participle of regular and irregular verbs ,it is an essential part to form the present perfect.
    Now what?
Remember and practice the past participle of regular and irregular verbs through pictures and slides.

  96. Talking with my friend, we conclude that we sometimes plan a class according to our abilities but we don't consider the different level that we can have in the same classroom.

    For instance:

What? I suppose the students to understand the steps to make an excellent project about customs of each country using different information and slides. It was told that they musn't copy the information and each project had to be authentic.

So what? Students have similar projects and information, they only changed the name of the country and the information was almost exactly. It became a boring and annoying time class.

Now what? First, We explained the rules and steps before developing the projects and applied rubrics to evaluate them appropriately. To make a better and motivational environment they made work groups and they had to use technology for example to record their works using the cellphone applying the content or structure learned in class.. Then, the videos were showed in the english lab and finally, they got a feedback for each work. It had a much better result.

Finally she explain the reading and compare it with their real life. It is a good strategy.

  99. Dear instructor,

We talked with my classmate about an experience that I recently had. I was teaching will VS going to and students seemed to catch the information very quickly; however, when we were finishing the class with a group work activity, students failed at all. In fact, I realized that the objective of the class was not achieved. I told her that the final activity was about ordering some sentences that used will and going to in the less time possible; therefore, she told me that the restriction of time and work under preasure could affect students and the results. I believe that too, by reason of their development through all the class and it was strange that at thee failed it just at the end. It makes me understand that activities must be chosen through a thorough selective process, if not the results will not be reliable.

    Best regards,

My friend and I were talking about students’ performance when they have to work in pairs. I told her that in some of the cases, just one-member works, but the other one does not participate; in fact, the objective of the task is not accomplished. Maybe, some students did not understand the class and this is the reason that do not allow them to work properly. Thereupon, when I develop a pair work or group work, I monitor the class to identify those students who are not taking part on the task and I talk with them to identify the problem to solve it and have them work. My friend also suggested to avoid developing group work, but I do not think this is the best decision.

    What?,
She expected the students to participate in the activity she prepared with them, so my students started asking about them, but did not want to participate.
    And that?,
I could tell that they were embarrassed because they did not want to discuss their daily routines with my students. Maybe they weren't sure how to speak English or didn't know how to express themselves.

    Now what?
It is important the students interacted with other courses more frequently.

  115. I talked with one of my colleages about the strategies she usually use to teach writing. She told me about a personal experience she had recently:
    What?
She was teaching how to write a paragraph. While she taught the students how to write a paragrapph, she noticed that students did not understand what supporting sentences were. (She could start the class by using a sandwich to explain what a paragraph looks like)
    So what?
Then, she asked them to read a given paragraph in their modules. She asked students to undeline the topic sentences and the supporting sentences to clarify the concepts. Student wrote their paragraphs with some errors in the end.
Now what? (Students could create a mind first with the teacher's help)
We agree that for future lessons we could bring some easy paragraphs (modelling) for students to underline its parts.
Students could also exchange their paragraphs to pair correction.

  116. I talked to my friend and told her about taking notes and reflecting on classes. She thought that it was a different perspective to planning and staying in touch with what is going on in the class.

We talked about a time that she had to work with students that were very unruly when she was being a substitute for the week. She had some really good ideas.

    What
The students seemed to be challenging her authority and not completing work when asked to do so.

    So what
Maybe this happened because she wasn't being hard enough on them.
Maybe because she wasn't informed about how to work with that specific class.

    Now what
Maybe next time she could express her expectations to the students at the beginning of the class and remind them of her standards when they begin to test her authority.
Maybe she could talk to the homeroom teacher before she teaches the class to have an idea about the students that she's going to be working with and how she might want to handle different situations.

My friend told me about how this worked well in one of her classes when they had a listening activity. She explained to the students that she was expecting them to be quite and listen to the story. And that their mission was to answer questions about the audio on their worksheets. She explained that if they weren't silent or were not paying attention, she would stop the audio and play it from the beginning. She had some students that tested her, so she stopped audio and repeated it until they were able to get through the whole story without any distractions.
The method of being clear with with her students really did help her to get through that difficult week of substituting.

  125. Good morning everybody,
Considering the question What did you and your colleague talk about?
Well, I called to my friend and I told my last experience in my high school, likewise she told me her experience while was working with little children.

I told her about my class with third senior high school students, the topic was phrasal verbs, as you know that topic is complicated because of the great quantity of particles and prepositions. I wanted the class to be interactive; therefore, I cut small pieces of pasteboard and I wrote each letter to form a phrasal verb. The next day, the activity was revise the phrasal on the board and then in two big groups to form the phrasal verbs with the small pieces of pasteboard, the group that finish soon will be the winner. This activity helped me so much in the topic being the class more interactive where the students enjoyed each part of it. On the other hand, my friend told about her experience with the topic wild animals with little children. She said me that she had prepared materials to develop the class such as poster about wild animals, flash card, realia. She had showed this material to the children which caught their attention immediately. The students practiced the pronunciation, listening and speaking skills. She felt very happy because students had understood the class and they had enjoyed it.
As a reflection I can argue that the teachers should use material to catch the students ‘attention with the objective that it being different and not bored.

    What?
She expected students get involved in the activity for almost half an hour but it didn't happen.
    So what?
She forgot to share the question through a screenshot and all of them started to talk about different topics instead of what she had planned. She realized that she needed to give clear guidelines and asked them if they could read the question.
    So what?
It is important to practice with a colleage or a friend before using a new tech tool in order to not have mistakes and become sucessful during lesson. I beleve that through errors humans learn everyday and set goals to improve.

A month ago a teach Future Tense and the planned activities did not go as I expected.
    what??
I expected that all my students got involved in the activity but it was no possible.
So what?? I did not give clear instructions. I should teach first vocabulary or some phrases to use to talk about future plans. I focused just in grammar tense.

Then, I gave them a matching activity about joining the information question with the correct answer and they did it successfully. My colleagues says that because of the previous activity the students were able to complete, also because I used information from the real life, in this case my students´ life. I share my experience about teaching Pre-k students ten years ago. Learning vocabulary adjectives. they needed to learn sweet, sour.

    What
The class was better than I expected because I use realia. I use a jar of honey and some lemon juice to make them taste with a stick for everyone.

    So what
Maybe this happened because children were tasting the flavor and repeating phrases like " It's sour, or its sweet" Then they also were listening and using the phrase "How is it?" when they ask to a classmate about any of those flavors.

    Now what
I were very motivated to use realia almost all the time and made them use the language and listening students to speak English made feel happy.

I used to explained the rules of the class to them sitting on the floor and all of them were paying attention, explaining what do I expect from them in a very friendly and lovely way helps me to succeed with my classes.

  147. My colleague Luis and I discussed what was one of the class experiences that we found difficult to carry out.
So, one of them was to teach the correct pronunciation of the regular verbs in the past tense, since they have three different ways of pronouncing -ed at the end of each verb.
    What?
I expected students to recognize the three different final pronunciations of regular verbs -ed like /t/, /d/ or /it/ after the listening activity and at the end of each verb pronunciation I emphasized how they had to make the correct possition of their tongues in order to recognize and pronounce the regular verb in past tense.
     So What?
Perhaps the students found this class very difficult because it is very complex to make a correct articulation of the mouth and position of the tongue in order to produce the sound.
    Now what?
It is important that in each English class we need to teach to students the correct pronunciation of words through techniques such as Drilling technique, minimal pairs, record and replay etc. since it will help them to communicate in a better way.

Talking about an opening topic could be an easy way to start the class but it isn't because most of the the time our students are boring with the same corny activity that teacher used to.
    So what we should do.
    The answer is really easy.
    Teachers may start their class
with an amazing motivitation that is what the students want to.
They like to listen to horror stories or sing songs etc.
That is an appropriated way to get student's attention.

  155. We talk about reading exercises. We agree that is indispensable that students understand the New voca and that reading arent too long because IT makes them fell boring and give them extra support because this kind of exercises are harder for them. We dont have good experiences teaching reading,so we have to work hard for next time.

  156. My coworker and I sent a work the last week by a Moodle platform because we start to work in this method due to the covid-19 pandemic. In this platform, we sent great activities where students felt relaxing and confident to work. First, we sent an amazing motivation and gave them the correct instructions where students understand and improve their knowledge. We consider that the students had the responsibility to review or complete the activities then we felt comfortable because the students applied the skills in a better way and finally we were surprised, we noticed that students improved their skills and learn better with technology didactic material. In the future, we will apply this material more than other kind of material.

  157. What?
Working with newspaper or magazine clippings and applying making sentences with pictograms, we all work.

    So what?
It was excellent because 98 percent of students captured work and two percent then learning was significant. Because then they got together and started speaking English and practicing the sentences they created.

    Now what?
Most of the students participated with the material and enjoyed learning.

Finally, I called my colleague Jorge, an English teacher, and he shared this experience and he told me that his strategy to attract interest in the students is good. congratulated and thanked me.

  160. We wtalking about the importance of giving clear onstructions for example in an activity, about the conditionals, Ss try to give examples from their own with zero conditional withoth taking account the other ones, this topic was given on line. By the wat I wanted my Ss write two examples with combined conditionals. 2. Maybe they write only in zero 'conditional because there werent examples as patterns. 3.In advance I should give a short dialogue with combined conditionals and begin paraphrasing. And then create another dialogue.

  161. 3 months I was teaching in a rural school, we were going to practice family members so I told them to bring some photos, it would be an easy activity, I expected a sucessfull output, but some children did not have a familiar album , some were brothers and had to share the same photo... so I took some old books to look at pictures and told them to imagine they are their relatives.
Next time, take in mind real situation of students, think about your resources

  163. I talked with a colleague Gaby, we are agree with the startegies and techniques that can use in a class.
What? The Simple Present tense with the verbs Love, Like and Prefer, the vocabulary was important, with videos about Routines and free time activities.
So what? The students found difficult in the speaking, because they don't use correctly the sentences with these verbs.
Now what? The best way in this class the audio specially with the words more difficult to pronounce.

  166. My partner and me talked about the topics most difficult in teaching English, so we were agree that listening and speaking were so hard due to the lack of materials and the students attitude to face activities that make them to participate, then we were thinking in strategies and methods of learning to use in class to make students more motivated to participate and how to get the suitable materials to teach.

  167. My last class was about present perfect tense
What: The students did not do all the activities given. I supposed that it will be a piece of cake. So, what: Maybe the students did that because they did not know all the verbs. Now what, I will start revising verbs first and emphasizing into the third column.

  168. We reflect with my partner about this new strategy, reflection, it is very important because it helps us see where we can improve, so that our English classes are more meaningful.

  169. We reflected on the speaking activities , the students do not play the role as we want they just repeat the phrases or words , and the task was to make a similar dialogue but using their situation and they dont want to create a new one. The shows lack of motivation because they believe that english is not important that all.We share some methods and activities to change this view but they dont want to do some different those courses are from the same school. Teachers work on differents activities to improve their speaking skills but a few students improved the mayority dont care about it.

  170. My partner said me that speaking is creative ,dynamic process . It occurs more effectively when the students are involved rather than possively receiving information .
I agree First, we learn to speak before others skills in our language

  172. I talked with my peer Marco and we were talking about vocabulary lessons and he told me that sometimes it is difficult for him teaching vocabulary because his students immediately start looking for the meaning in their dictionaries in order to translate and I recommended him that he has to explain his students that the most important is try to understand from our basic notions, knowledge, experience, relating the words with something that could be right or wrong and then we can continue with the explanation of the words by looking for the definitions in English, looking the flashcards and other activities that can help the students to understand the meaning of those new words. We discussed about how important is to explore our student`s prior knowledge and we decided to continue sharing our experiences by reflecting all about our lessons positives and negatives things in order to improve our teaching.

  173. Talking with my colleage, we made especial emphasis in the importance of using audio and video resources especially with children. Commonly with teenagers, we don't use a lot of images, but teaching children we understand that in order to get significant knowledge, it is really important to use visual material as well as the use of games. In a special occasion, the panning didn't result as I expected; at the beginning it was so frustrating for me, hence I had to improvise, and it was so better!

  174. Dear all,

As I mentioned before, I have a friend with whom we share our professional work. I just contacted her again to tell her about this activity, too. She is very interested in all the new ideas being shared in this course. We plan to carry on them with different themes and with different groups to verify the results.

    Kind regards,

  175. I have talked to my Friend Gustavo Almeida. We were reflecting on a class about present perfect. He told me that the best thing about that class was when the students did the exercises, that he had already planned. But something that he couldn't understand at the beginning was that at the end, he asked students to speak about their recent experiences, and the students couldn't do the exercise very well. He told me that it was maybe because the students don't know verbs in the past perfect way, it was difficult to do the last activity. Now and for next class he will give them first a review of verbs in the three ways before teaching that class.

  178. My colleague and I talked about the pronunciation of regular verbs in past since we have noticed that students cannot pronounce the regular verbs in past correctly. While we talked, we concluded that one of the causes could be that the students did not receive any kind of information about it or simply students did not feel motivated to practice it. I told my colleague when I teach this topic apart to identify the past tense of the verbs, we practice the pronunciation. He said that it is worth because English is not only spelling or writing, English includes speaking and pronunciation is relevant for it.

  182. My colleague thinks one of her lessons about the Simple Present did not work out the way she planned it. Students seemed not to remember any of the rules about third person
So what? Ss did not kn0w what third person meant. WHen T changes He for Paul, students got lost and did not apllied the rule
Now what? Teacher plans to stop using Grammar Words and model third rule with real examples (by taking real names from the class)

  183. Talk to my partner about discipline and communication between student and teacher inside and outside the classroom, concluding that communication is one of the aspects that has the greatest influence on classroom dynamics because it allows participants to work in In a harmonious way, so that the teacher can develop as a professional, as well as for the students to carry out the actions and natural activities proper to their age.

  184. My friend and I talked about how convenient it is to reflect on the activities we do in class. We focused on a day when a group of foreign students visited our school, and we were surprised because at the beginning all my students were very shy and embarrassed. They couldn't pronounce any sentences in English. All the time students said, “I can't,” “they didn't understand me,” “I fear of making mistakes.” However, my friend and I created an example of dialogue mixing Spanish and English with the native speakers. As a result, our students were confident about their knowledge and started to talk to them. At the end, we assessed the activity and we realized it is very important to work on their self – esteem no matter the situation. We also agree that it is very useful to change the type of phrases like “ they cannot or do not want” and reflect on the next time “they will do better.”

  186. We were talking about an activity we tried to use with our new students. That activity didnt work they way I tought, a spoken activity. I was expecting students will speak among them practicing a dialogue. May be they didnt want to do it beacuse they didnt use to practice oral activities. It was a challenge to train them to practice oral activities, after that day things were better, they started to speak and feel comfortable.

  187. Well, I just shared a classroom experience with John about a role play activity done in one of my classes . It was the class hour that day, and I noticed they looked so tired, so I decided to arrange a student practice activity with them. I had them role play a textbook conversation in small groups. It was a sunny day and I asked them all to get out of the classroom and perform the activity in the campus garden. They did it great! I was expecting they just said "No, teacher, let's go home!" but they really enjoyed it! To sum up, as everyone knows role play is an useful student practice activity that allows students to interact with their peers and feel more comfortably. This is something that does not happen regu;arly with their techers because the teacher is considered in an upper authority position by students. In another occasion, I would like to twist this activity choosing favorite movie scenes and show how good actors or actress they may be!

Provide them with short readings, fairy tales or popular artists, real contexts to students.

  190. I had a class with students of second bachillerato and they had to do an audio book.
They had to record their voices to add to her work.
    What?
I didn't expect that just one person did the dialogue.
    So what?
Students should be helped by me with some dialogues and pronunciation.
    Now what?
I analized if I do this kind of work I should practice some vocabulary related to the topic given to them. I have to motivate to talk more in class and be free.

  191. Talking with a colleague, we are agree with some strategies and techniques to use in a class.
What? My class was about Present Perfect and Simple Past.
I was expecting that students can write sentences in present perfect and simple past but most of them didn't do the acitiviy.
So what? The students found difficult the writing activity because they did not know the verbs.
Now what? The best way to teach this grammar tense given them a list of regular and irregular verbs so that they can learn them at home. After that, T. can asks them to write sentences using them.

  192. Well, I teach phonetics and phonology and one of the things that I talk about with my colleagues is how difficult could be to students pronounced in the right way some consonants and vowels. We think that having good pronunciation will help them to develop speaking skills and will improve their pronunciation.

  193. Well, we talked about one student who had a specific necessity. This student was no able to get the information for more than 3 hours. So, we decided to do something different with him. Everytime we had a quiz, we prepared it before and we took the quiz maximum 3 hours after the class in order to help the students. Sometimes it was successful, but it was not always the same. This student had something more difficult but we are sure we did everything for helping.
